As of 1st January 2020, the new IMDG Code Edition, including Amendment 39-18, comes into force. The IMO published the new changes, therefore, rendering the previous 2014 edition obsolete.

The IMDG Code provides guidelines on how to handle dangerous goods – segregation, labeling, packing, and storage – and how to respond to emergencies. Additionally, it gives direction on the good operation practices and advice on terminologies usage.

Some of the changes adopted in the IMDG include the replacement of the name “Risk” with “Hazard” and “Risks” with “Hazards” entirely. There are new parts added, such as paragraph 2.0.6, which covers the classification of articles that contain dangerous goods N.O.S. Additionally, there are new entries added to the text such as 3227, 3109, 3116, and 3119 to the tables.

The code overhauls some sections, such as Chapter 2.8, which covers the Classification of corrosives while it modifies other parts such as the stowage categories on class 1 entries.

There are updated packing instructions on chapter 4.2, and specimen labels on chapter 5.2 appear in the landscape table. Information about bulk containers now appears in Chapter 5.3.

There new segregation groups and codes found in section 7.2.8, and the Dangerous Goods List contain new entries – TOXIC, FLAMMABLE, N.O.S (UN 3535), and LITHIUM BATTERIES INSTALLED IN CARGO TRANSPORT UNIT (UN 3536).

It contains new entries – “ARTICLES CONTAINING DANGEROUS GOOD’ on UN numbers 3537 to 3548. The EmS guide contains new assignments on column 15 of the DGL, and the heading on column 4 reads “subsidiary hazard(s).”

The changes in the IMDG will affect all Hazmat logistics companies. Go Hazmat Hub will adopt the new IMDG changes by 1st January, whereby all the recommendations and guidelines as per the code will start applying.
